FEBRUARY 2024 WLP NEWSLETTER

Happy February, WLP Success Sisters!

Did you know that Leaders (especially C- Executives) are the least likely to hear appreciation more than any other role type (e.g., Manager, Frontline Worker, etc.) in business? They are so used to pointing people to expected outcomes and less likely to NEED to be acknowledged for their contributions. But, of course, who doesn’t want to be seen and heard by the people we care about the most, right?

Many people think C-level executives tell people what to do all day as if others are simply order takers. If this happens, it works against them, keeping them in the founder’s trap (unable to grow the organization or get out of the weeds). The best Leaders realize they have an entire organization of clients (employees) on top of external clients supporting the revenue flow.

Part of my day as a Business Transformation Expert is to normalize how the leadership team handles their own resistance to change (as they lead others through change), and also to inform my clients how the company, employee, team, and client life-cycles ebb and flow, and, most importantly, support them with ensuring their time is well spent, keeping productivity and profitability at it’s maximum.

What I appreciate most about my clients is that they don’t do things JUST for money. They focus on their values, their culture, and their mission.

» The question is, how aligned are our behaviors and the behaviors of our team with our organization’s mission?

In this month’s master class, “Strategic Thinking: How To Get Out Of The Weeds & Fast Track Your Organization,” we discussed the importance of having a clear mission. For example, when we don’t have a clear mission, staying out of the day-to-day “weeds” can be problematic.

As a reminder, a vision is who our organization is, e.g., “The world’s best customer experience every day” (AMEX). “To be the world’s most successful and important information technology company.” (IBM).

Our mission answers:

  • What is being done at a high level to achieve our vision?
  • What is the long-term impact of accomplishing our vision?

For example, check out the following mission statements:

  • “To accelerate the world’s transition to sustainable energy.” TESLA
  • “We’re In Business to Save Our Home Planet.” PATAGONIA
  • “We ignite opportunity by setting the world in motion” – UBER
  • “To prevent and alleviate human suffering wherever it may be found.” AMERICAN RED CROSS
  • “Connect the world’s professionals to make them more productive and successful.” – LINKEDIN

As you think through your personal or organizational mission statement, here are a few things to keep in mind:

  • Imagine the day when your mission is accomplished.
  • Keep it concise.
  • Remember that people want to engage with brands that share their values.
  • Find out the thoughts and feelings of employees and other key stakeholders.

As a leader, you play a crucial role in shaping your organization’s success. You can lead your team toward achieving the mission by aligning your and your team’s actions with the bigger picture.

So, whose leadership will you acknowledge today? I hope your own!

Here are some of the Ah-ha moments that were shared during the Master Class:

  • “You can’t get better at things you are not doing.”
  • Prompted to ask the question, “What about me? I Choose Me!”
  • The hard work and results are showing up in our pocketbooks and our more relaxed neck and shoulders.
  • Help business owners succeed in the community to prosper.
  • Allow team members to be a bigger part of the company mission.
  • I have my 90-day plan, and I need to work on that plan.

How some of you felt after our session:

  • Relaxed, “I’m feeling like I’m “killing it” in my business and life.”
  • “Inspired to have a life well-lived.”
  • Motivated to lead a purposeful life, focusing on experiences and moments that bring fulfillment and meaning.”

Here are a few mission statements from members and guests:

  • We create collaborative conversations to connect company cultures and our world community. – Nina Segura, this is my mission for the Women Leadership Power community.
  • We help families live their best lives today and build a future they can be proud of by helping them build customized plans to achieve peace of mind, maintain family unity, and create meaningful legacies. – Hanney
  • Do what I must with integrity and positive intention and what I want with gratitude and love of life. – Traci Miller, personal mission
