OCTOBER 2024 WLP NEWSLETTER

Hello Leader,

This month, we’re exploring one of leadership’s most critical yet often overlooked aspects: Your Epic Exit. In the Every Day Is Friday ACTT Blueprint book, we focus on the Financials section. Whether it’s the end of a career chapter, a business transition, or a personal evolution, planning for your future must ensure a graceful and empowered exit. No matter where you are or your role, if you don’t have a transition plan, someone else will create one for you.

Here’s the truth: others often shape our financial journey—through salaries, revenue, investments, and even life choices. But without intentionality, this leaves us feeling adrift, unsatisfied, and unsure of our long-term security. To change this narrative, we can Captain our wealth, navigate financial waters with clarity, and chart a course for an Epic Exit that reflects our true desires and values.

How Do You Rate Your Financial Acumen?

As a leader, how well do you make financial decisions in your company? Here’s a definition of financial acumen to help you gauge where you can rate yourself:

  • Financial acumen is making informed, data-driven decisions that align financial strategies with long-term and short-term goals. It involves understanding and analyzing key financial metrics—such as IRR, ROI, and valuation ratios—to assess a company’s financial health, risk, and growth potential. This skill tracks profitability and uses financial insights to drive effectiveness, optimize value, and reduce non-value activities across operations.

  • Strong financial acumen consistently links financial planning, cost management, and capital allocation to the company’s success. Leaders with solid financial acumen ensure that every investment and financial decision is strategically aligned to deliver maximum value, contributing to short-term results and sustainable growth. Effective financial acumen also includes anticipating and mitigating risks while staying agile and prepared for future opportunities.

Here’s an exercise we can all benefit from!

Step 1: Imagine Money as a Board Member

What if money was a member of your board of directors? Like any other board member, it has insights, opinions, and advice. This exercise will help you explore your current relationship with money and how it impacts your leadership.

Here’s what to consider:
  1. How does money communicate with you?
    • She tends to ignore me until there’s an urgent need, and then she’s grateful.
  2. What would money say about your relationship with it?
    • They wonder where I am, even though I am close.
  3. How do you feel when you think about money in your company?
    • He never thinks I am enough, no matter how much I show up.
  4. How valued does money feel?
    • They see me as a partner in their success, appreciating the opportunities I bring.
Step 2: Reflect on Your Responses

Take a moment to review your answers. How does this board member “money” see your leadership? Are there any recurring themes or surprises? How might these reflections influence your financial decisions from now on?

Step 3: Create a New Money Dialogue

Now, it’s time to rewrite the story. Please respond to the insight’s money shared with you by writing a few sentences to it. Here are a few prompts to get you started.

Dear Money:
  • “I want to improve our relationship by…”
  • “I realize that I have been…”
  • “Moving forward, I will be more…”

Step 4: Action Steps

Based on your reflection, take three actionable steps to strengthen your financial relationship:

  1. Create a consistent financial check-in to review your financial health and upcoming needs.
  2. Strategically budget for growth to ensure long-term financial wins.
  3. Set clear financial goals or build reserves to handle future desires and challenges.
  4. This exercise is designed to be more empowered with your finances, not just as a resource but as a partner in your success.

Financial Empowerment & Your Epic Exit

Planning your Epic Exit requires a solid financial foundation, as emphasized by wealth advisor Diana Verity, a JPMorgan Wealth Advisor. She highlights the importance of reviewing your current financial situation, setting clear retirement goals, and consulting with professionals to tailor your investment strategy. Whether you’re a highly compensated individual in a public or private corporation or a business owner, it’s crucial to understand your retirement sources, such as deferred compensation, company stock, retirement accounts, and Social Security.

Defining your goals, forming a reliable team, and keeping your plans up to date are essential to ensuring long-term success. Strategic use of retirement accounts, maximizing Social Security, and minimizing taxes on withdrawals are also necessary steps. Clients also want to feel secure about their legacy, ensuring their loved ones are taken care of and that their affairs align with their wishes through proper planning and documentation.

D.I.V.A. Framework for an Epic Exit

Let’s summarize the keys to an Epic Exit with the D.I.V.A. framework:

  • D – Honor your Desire to create an epic personal and professional exit.
  • I –Imagine your exit. What if it’s better than you can even imagine?
  • V –Vocalize your exit with loved ones and trusted advisors to inspire action.
  • A – Use your Every Day Is Friday: ACTT Blueprint to strategically plan for all aspects of your personal and professional life.

As we continue this journey, if you haven’t already, I encourage you to take 5 minutes for the Women Leadership Power yearly survey by October 21st at noon Eastern to help us understand how we can better support your needs. We have made valuable changes so far; let your voice be heard so we can make some more to benefit everyone!
