Hello Bad A$$ & Brilliant!
Ahh, the joys of February – the month we celebrate love.
I’ve been thinking a lot about love and how this and other values impact those around us. What I know for sure is that our values show up in our vision and how we influence others to achieve that vision. So the question is, how aligned are our behaviors and the behaviors of our leadership team with our organization’s mission?
In this month’s master class, “Strategic Thinking: How To Get Out Of The Weeds & Fast Track Your Organization,” we discussed the importance of having a clear mission. For example, when we don’t have a clear mission, staying out of the weeds and evaluating our strategy, goals, and success measures can be problematic.
Many organizations today seek stronger profitably, engagement, and retention, which often requires alignment on our mission. As a reminder a vision is who we are being, and our mission is how we get there. There are typically two components to a mission statement:
• What is being done at a high level to achieve our vision?
• What is the long-term impact of accomplishing the vision?
For example, check out the following mission statements:
• “To accelerate the world’s transition to sustainable energy.” TESLA
• “We’re In Business To Save Our Home Planet.” PATAGONIA
• “We ignite opportunity by setting the world in motion” – UBER
• “To prevent and alleviate human suffering wherever it may be found.” AMERICAN RED CROSS
• “Connect the world’s professionals to make them more productive and successful.” – LINKEDIN
As you think through your mission statement, here are a few things to keep in mind:
• Imagine the day when your mission is accomplished.
• Keep it concise.
• Remember that customers and people want to engage with brands that share their values.
• Find out the thoughts and feelings of employees and other key stakeholders.
• Don’t confuse a mission statement with a vision or value proposition.
Our special guest Laura Liss added so much to the conversation. She said she feels education is empowerment and she wants to help her clients simplify and transform their business transactions into success. As part of her mission statement, she wants to enable her clients to make informed, practical decisions to achieve their goals.
A few of you said the value you got from our time together:
• Let go or be dragged. I can get lost in the weeds!
• I learned that I have my mission and now have some more clarity on how to express it in one statement
• I learned that it’s ok not to have my mission nailed down yet… I’m getting there, and it’s progress, not perfection!
• “Money is my partner in prosperity”
• Many of us have the same struggles, and the point of our being together is to support one another in a more excellent solution.
• It’s so refreshing to be somewhere I can be vulnerable and excited and SHARE with others!
Check out the presentation for the Dos and Don’ts of creating a mission statement.
