AUGUST 2024 WLP NEWSLETTER

Hello Change Leader,

In a recent poll, business leaders identified the top two ways the people around them resist change: Building barriers like a “beaver” constructing a dam, delaying progress. Secondly, acting as a “know-it-all owl,” deflecting new ideas. Regardless of how people resist change, it is a natural way to slow things down. While resisting change is often driven by rational and emotional factors, enhancing our leadership skills is essential to creating a more positive impact.

When we go into organizations, we typically evaluate the team based on the below behaviors related to Change Leadership:

  1. Challenge the status quo and foster innovation.
  2. Clearly define the desired outcomes of change, such as competitiveness and profitability.
  3. Address your resistance to change while guiding others through the change lifecycle.
  4. Cultivate creative ideas, possibilities, or solutions in response to challenges.
  5. Encourage others to innovate and maximize involvement in the change process.
  6. Show empathy towards those who did not choose the implemented changes.
  7. Combine intuition and facts to make sound judgments.
  8. Acknowledge and celebrate small increments of positive change.

Take a moment and rate yourself and your team (for extra credit) on a scale from 1-7 (7 being the most skilled) on the above behaviors.

This month’s reading from “Every Day Is Friday: The ACTT Blueprint For Leaders & Entrepreneurs” covers Chapter 3, “Secrets To Make Every Day Friday” (pages 63-66 and 103-111), and Chapter 9, “The Change Curve,” starting on page 181.

As we explore these chapters, we focus on managing our resistance to change while leading others through it. One effective method is establishing a “Leadership Stake,” a belief paired with an expected outcome. For example, “When we change our perspective, we create a space for empowering choices.”

The power of leading change lies in interpreting our beliefs, thoughts, and desires and inspiring others amidst challenges. To support you with clear and consistent messaging here are “The 5 Ps for Communicating Change”:
  1. Purpose: What is our purpose? Why are we changing, and why now?
  2. Big Picture: What are the changes, and how will they look once implemented?
  3. Plan: What is our transition plan? How might we mitigate any risks?
  4. Part: What is my role? How can I make a difference, and who can I contact with concerns?
  5. Party: When will we celebrate our successes?

As you reflect on how people resist change, change leadership behaviors, and the 5Ps of communicating change, remember that leading change is not just about managing processes—it’s about inspiring people through their uncertainties. You can create an environment where change is embraced by fostering a clear vision, empowering your team, and celebrating minor victories.

Let me know how this information is supporting you and your team in navigating the complexities of change to secure the wins you expect.
